Tapo C245D Dual Lens Home Camera Review

작성자 olreview · 2026-04-22

The home camera market is truly a battleground these days. As single-person households and dual-income families increase globally, the demand for remotely checking homes has exploded. In response, numerous brands are flooding the market with a wide variety of home cameras. With prices varying wildly and features differing from one product to another, many people are likely struggling with which product to choose.

Personally, when choosing smart home devices, I tend to look for Tapo first. While TP-Link is a network specialist company that has achieved the #1 market share in Wi-Fi products globally, more importantly, it’s because the IoT ecosystem Tapo has built is robust. The ability to centrally manage not only home cameras but also smart bulbs, smart plugs, sensors, and smart hubs all through a single app is a major advantage.

Tapo’s home camera lineup, in particular, is truly diversified to suit user needs and installation environments. However, the product I’m introducing today is a rather unique one among them: the Tapo C245D, which is equipped with dual lenses. It features two lenses in a single camera body, and from now on, we’ll take a closer look at this recommended dual-lens home camera, the Tapo C245D.

Product Specifications and Contents

The Tapo C245D is a dual-lens pan-and-tilt security camera released by Tapo, TP-Link’s smart home brand. TP-Link is a global networking company with 2 billion customers in 170 countries worldwide. Since entering the Korean market in 2012, it has gained high trust domestically, topping sales in the home CCTV category on major shopping malls like Naver. It has also been named Forbes’ #1 premium brand for customer trust for two consecutive years.

Tapo products officially distributed in Korea come with an industry-leading 3-year free warranty. As home cameras are long-term use products, this aspect can significantly influence purchasing decisions, making Tapo’s long warranty period quite attractive.

The package includes: Camera body, DC power adapter, mounting bracket, mounting template sticker, 4 sets of mounting screws and anchors, and a quick start guide.

Appearance and Features

The Tapo C245D measures 82.2 × 82.2 × 126.2mm and weighs approximately 230g, making it compact enough to fit in the palm of your hand. Its clean white design blends naturally with any interior, whether placed in the living room or bedroom.

The most striking feature of its appearance is undoubtedly the two lenses positioned vertically. The top lens is a 6mm telephoto lens, capturing approximately 3 times sharper details compared to a standard lens and supporting up to 10.8x digital zoom. This lens is designed to rotate, allowing it to move freely within a horizontal range of 340 degrees and a vertical range of 70 degrees, enabling object tracking.

The bottom lens is a 122-degree wide-angle lens. It captures the entire space at a glance with its wide field of view. Both lenses support 2K 3MP (2304×1296) resolution and are equipped with a 1/2.8-inch Starlight sensor, ensuring clear video even in low-light conditions.

The back features a high-quality built-in microphone and speaker, enabling two-way audio communication. With built-in noise cancellation, you can clearly hear the other person’s voice and speak directly through the camera. This is useful for letting your pets know it’s snack time or for your children to hear your voice.

Beneath the top camera module, there’s a MicroSD card slot for local storage of recorded videos. It supports capacities up to 512GB. Since this product employs a dual recording method where two lenses record simultaneously, we recommend using a high-speed MicroSD card with a fast data write speed. Using a card with Class 10 or higher and a U3 rating or higher will ensure stable, uninterrupted recording.

Installation

All Tapo smart devices can be managed through a single Tapo app. I’m already familiar with the Tapo app environment, as I use Tapo smart light strips and the Tapo H110 home base. However, even first-time users will find it easy to install the app and connect devices.

The installation process is simple. First, power on the camera, then follow the instructions in the Tapo app to connect the camera to your home Wi-Fi. The connection is completed in just a few steps, such as selecting the model name and entering your Wi-Fi SSID. Thanks to the high-quality Korean localization, the process is intuitive and easy to follow.

This product can be installed in three ways: tabletop placement, wall mount, and ceiling installation. When you select the installation location during the app setup process, the camera’s video feed automatically adjusts to that position. Even if you don’t mount it on a wall or ceiling, you can use it immediately by simply placing it on furniture, so if you know how to connect to basic Wi-Fi, installation will be quick.

Features and Characteristics

Once installation is complete, you can receive guidance on the product’s core features in the Tapo app.

The most significant feature is, of course, omnidirectional monitoring using dual lenses. With the wide-angle lens, you can grasp a large area at a glance, while simultaneously using the telephoto lens to intensively monitor a desired area. Tapo’s AI technology further enhances this, automatically recognizing and detecting people, pets, vehicles, and even baby cries.

When you open the camera, you can simultaneously view two video feeds on the app screen: the top telephoto lens and the bottom wide-angle lens. The biggest advantage of this product is being able to see both wide-angle and telephoto footage on a single screen without switching views. You can also use functions such as taking photos, recording, adjusting camera microphone volume, and two-way talk in real-time.

The screen can be switched between portrait and landscape modes, and in landscape mode, you can adjust the camera direction using the directional buttons in the bottom left, making it even more convenient when monitoring on a tablet or a larger screen.

Various View Modes and Panorama

In the Pan/Tilt and Movement menu, after the user specifies a viewpoint, you can quickly monitor a specific area. Furthermore, by utilizing the panorama function, you can scan the entire surroundings 360 degrees and then touch the desired area to move the camera directly to that location.

The camera view can be switched between dual view and single view, and if you own multiple Tapo cameras, you can simultaneously monitor and control up to 36 units.

AI Detection and Notifications

The automatic tracking function works as follows: when the fixed wide-angle lens at the bottom detects events like movement, people, or pets, the rotating telephoto lens at the top automatically turns in that direction to focus on and track the moving subject.

In the detailed device settings, you can configure various detection functions utilizing Tapo’s AI technology. Beyond detecting people, pets, vehicles, and general movement, it can also distinguish and detect baby cries, dog barks, and cat meows.

Especially when utilized as a baby monitor or childcare camera, you can receive instant notifications upon detecting a child’s movement or crying. Similarly, when used as a dog or cat camera, you can monitor your pet’s movements and vocalizations in real-time, providing peace of mind even when you’re away from home. Most importantly, the fact that this AI detection feature is offered completely free of charge, without any additional cost, is a distinct advantage compared to other brands.

Privacy Mode

Privacy Mode can be set to automatically turn on when you’re home and turn off after you leave for work, using schedule settings.

You can also designate specific areas within the camera’s view as privacy zones to block those areas from being recorded.

Patrol Mode

If you pre-set up to 8 locations, the camera will automatically patrol those locations at regular intervals. By designating important points such as the entrance, living room, pet area, or children’s room, it’s as if the camera automatically rotates and monitors these areas without you having to operate it directly.

Real-time Notifications and Monitoring

After completing these detection settings, you will receive real-time notifications on your smartphone app whenever an event occurs. You can also set monitoring times according to your preferences, which helps reduce unnecessary notifications.

Local and Cloud Storage

When you insert a MicroSD card, recorded photos and videos can be stored locally and viewed remotely. It’s also convenient that you can play back and monitor each video captured by the dual lenses.

The biggest concern when using a home camera is hacking and personal information leakage, and Tapo has a highly reliable security system in this regard. All videos stored on the camera and in the cloud are protected with AES-128bit encryption, a corporate-level security standard.

If you need to store videos for a long period, the Tapo Care cloud plan allows you to save 30 days’ worth of video clips to the cloud without limits. Tapo operates on a user-created account basis, meaning there’s no default password to forget changing, thus fundamentally preventing hacking incidents from the start. As for the Tapo Care cloud, it operates on AWS (Amazon Web Services), boasting world-class security, and all data is stored on Amazon servers in the United States.

User Review

I actually set up the Tapo C245D and installed it in the living room to use it. The advantages of dual-lens recording are clearly felt when you use it yourself. Existing single-lens home cameras lacked detail when viewed broadly and had the limitation of missing surrounding situations when zoomed in. However, with this product, the wide-angle lens continuously shows the overall situation while the telephoto lens focuses on areas as needed, leaving virtually no blind spots.

It’s especially great for households with pets, serving as a perfect dog cam or cat cam. For example, if you have two cats, the bottom wide-angle camera illuminates the entire living room, identifying the location of both, while the top telephoto camera intently tracks and monitors the movements of one. For households with multiple pets, you can use the fixed camera to monitor the whole area while the movable camera focuses on a specific pet, making it highly recommended for pet parents raising dogs and cats.

It’s also perfect as a baby monitor for households with infants; you can view the entire napping child with the wide-angle lens, and zoom in with the telephoto lens to check their expression or movements. Thanks to the baby crying detection feature, even if you’re working in another room, you’ll receive an immediate alert if your baby cries, allowing for a quick response. It could also be a practical and thoughtful item for baby shower gifts, newborn gifts, or 100-day celebration gifts.

The image quality is also excellent; below are images captured by the top telephoto camera and the bottom wide-angle camera, respectively. The wide-angle lens captures the entire space in one frame with a wide 122-degree field of view, yet without significant distortion. While the telephoto lens also offers 2K resolution, its 6mm focal length clearly captures even the subject’s expressions and intricate details.

Both lenses are equipped with 1/2.8-inch Starlight sensors, which was impressive, as they deliver clear, noise-free video not only during the day but also in dimly lit indoor environments. Especially since IR night vision is supported up to 12m, you can clearly check in sharp black-and-white footage where your pet is sleeping or if your child is tossing and turning, even at night with all lights off.

The two-way audio feature is also practical. If it detects your dog barking while you’re out, you can immediately speak through the app, and it’s also possible to sing a lullaby to your child. With a speaker volume of 69dB, sound is delivered clearly enough in small rooms.

Concluding the review

The Tapo C245D gave me the impression that it’s not just a product with an extra lens, but one where careful thought has gone into how to utilize dual lenses effectively. The structure where the wide-angle and telephoto lenses intelligently collaborate to secure both a broad field of view and intricate details simultaneously definitively resolves the shortcomings I felt with existing single-lens home cameras.

The fact that AI detection features are provided for free without additional subscription costs is a definite value-for-money advantage compared to other home camera brands in the same price range. Because it differentiates and sends notifications for people, pets, vehicles, and even baby cries, it seems great that you don’t have to suffer from unnecessary false alarms.

The Tapo C245D is a versatile product that can be widely used as a baby monitor or baby camera for families with infants, a dog cam or cat cam for pet owners, and a home CCTV for single-person households or those living alone. I’d also like to recommend it to those who are currently looking for practical items as a birth gift or newborn gift. If you’re looking for a recommended home camera, please take a look at the Tapo C245D, which offers an elevated level of monitoring with its dual lenses.
